At the Simonson Cattle Company, we hold our beliefs in our family heritage. For generations, our family has nurtured the land that was homesteaded by our ancestors. This land, once claimed by Native Americans, was found by William Simonson who came to this area in hopes of a new life. With nothing but his saddle and his saddle horse, he spent his time breaking horses and hunting wild cattle on the open prairie. When the Homestead Act was declared, in 1862, he took claim to a homestead on Medicine Lake where he then met Henrietta, a Norwegian immigrant. Together, William and Henrietta began the heritage of what would eventually become known as the Simonson Cattle Company.

Our Tradition

We are committed to building a better tomorrow, even if that means sacrificing today. At the Simonson Cattle Company, we are passionate about nurturing the land and being mindful of the animals that reside on it. In every aspect of what we do, we hold ourselves responsible for being sustainable through regenerative agriculture practices and land stewardship. We value the longevity of the land and believe that longevity is only rewarded to those who give more than they take. That is why we are committed to giving back to the land through our sustainable agriculture techniques that not only maintain the land but also further improve it. While this does not always benefit us today, our future will thank us later.

Our commitment

Starting in 1996, we started the transition away from industrial agriculture techniques and began operating our farm in balance with nature. This transition has been an evolution in thought and is a constant work in progress for the Simonson Cattle Company. Today, we practice many regenerative agriculture practices such as no-till farming, rotational grazing, planting cover crops, limiting our use of harsh fertilizer and spray chemicals, and composting manure. While these practices are often contentious, it is crucial to remember that they are not new; regenerative agriculture originates with the Indigenous people. We manage our lands through a holistic approach that is aimed at getting back to our roots.
